exhibition of 8-channel sound installation
15 May–18 Jun 2021
Saturday, 15 May 2021 at 12.00 (noon) – opening for families
Tuesday, 18 May 2021 at 19.00 pm. – live sound event
It starts with silence. The most quiet, silent places are in nature, in winter. Sleep is rest. And resting carries within the seed of expecta-tion. Bodies are still, as if they had stopped living, they wait. Wait for a long time. Silence, ambiguity, indeterminacy, time running in endless cycles and repetitions. When the temperatures rise, the trees wake up after (increasingly shorter) winter hibernation and respond by pumping the water and minerals through the trunk into the leaves, where photosynthesis takes place as well as the processes of forming new leaves and branches, healing and trunk growth (easily determined by annual rings). A colossal machine – though still only a part of even bigger ones – is set in motion. The composition is about a coincidence and about the rule, the moment when things shift, when transformation occurs, when the cycle begins anew. As when the lungs take a deep inhale after a long pause. Inaudible high frequency cracking pulsating through the tree mass is a sign, a trigger for a series of events that stir the entire bio system into motion again.
Using different kinds of sensors attached inside the tree trunk, the installation captures the flow of sound transformations in the wood mass, incorporating them into the basic music structure of this 8-channel composition. When we listen to the trees using sensitive equipment and bring the captured vibrations into our hearing range, we can hear a mini-malist blueprint of a cacophonous symphony emerging, changing, fusing and disappearing in a perpetual breathing cycle. Rhythmical patterns, fluctuations, high frequency modulations of the pulsating capillary system shaped by the pressure increasing and decreasing, are as microelements of a language belonging to a much wider capacity of trees to communicate. When the cycle ends, everything is again immersed in stillness, rest and silence.
The exhibition live sound event will feature a live electroacoustic event performed in a static installation inside the gallery by artist, who will use additional materials and physical interventions to develop and reinterpret the composition on display.
